Flea & Tick Season
March is soon approaching and so is th warmer weather, which also means an increase of fleas and ticks.
Why is it important to apply a topical product to my pet? Topical products, such as Frontline and Promeris, prevent fleas by killing them upon contact with your pet's hair coat. The fleas don't even have to bite for the products to work. These products also kill the ticks that can give your pet's diseases such as Lyme disease, Erlichiosis, and Babesiosis.
How long do these products last? These products are meant to last for a full 30 days. There are, however, some activities that may decrease the efficacy of the products. Bathing can drastically decrease the effects of the flea and tick preventives. If you bathe your pet with a soap-free shampoo, the products efficacy is decreased only slightly. Soap shampoos, such as medicated or flea shampoos, wash all of the oils out of your pets skin and the flea and tick preventive washes out with it. If you must use a medicated shampoo on your pet, it is best to apply the topical product three days after the bath. This allows your pets skin to have rebuilt the normal oils that distribute these preventives.
Why is it important to apply these products every month? When you apply one of these products to your pet, it is present in your pet's body for thirty days before it starts losing its efficacy. Applying these products every month, as directed by the manufacturers recommendations, helps to ensure that your pet always has levels of these products in their system. This may sound like a bad thing, but in fact it is very good. When you only apply these products sporadically, your pet's body may lose the levels of these products completely at some point. At the next application your pet's body is re-introduced to the product. The re-introduction process can eventually lead to your pet's resistance to that product.
